Certified Counselor Training: Meeting the New WA State Requirements

This 7-hour training is designed to meet the needs of the new designation of certified counselor, as well as certified counselor candidates, and independent licensure candidates. It will cover risk assessment, ethics, screening using the Global Assessment of Functioning, client referral, and Washington State law.

The 'Impossible' Patient

The WSSCSW is very pleased to present Glen Gabbard, M.D., on September 26, 2009. In collaboration with the NW Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study and NASW, the conference will be held at the Swedish Medical Center/Cherry Hill Auditorium (not Smith Towers) from 8:30-4:30.

Presenting a series of four lectures, Dr. Gabbard will address several dimensions in treating The 'Impossible' Patient :

  • Problems with terms like 'resistance'
  • Managing the 'Erotized Transference': strategies for maintaining boundaries and avoiding shaming the patient;
  • The Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorder: distinguishing treatable features and transference/countertransference;
  • Mentalizing and Interpretation in the Dynamic Therapy of the Borderline Personality Disorder; Discussion will follow each lecture, which will be illuminated by his use of video shorts, using actors, to demonstrate his approach.

Bio

Glen O. Gabbard, M.D. is Brown Foundation chair of psychoanalysis and professor of psychiatry at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He previously served as Director on Menninger Hospital and the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is a well-known teacher and widely published author in professional boundary violations, personality disorders, and the application of psychoanalytic thinking to the cinema and television.

This conference meets Ethics & Law requirements for 3 CEUs.
